Xavier's Dragon
by S. Jordan (Eat This Cakes)
My grandson wanted a dragon for his 5th birthday. I scoped out the web to get some ideas and inspiration and this is what I came up with. I started out with a 9" and 6" oval, stacked with buttercream between the layers. I carved the body into the shape I wanted and used the scraps to piece together his tail, neck and head. Plastering with buttercream as needed. I covered the whole thing in buttercream then the tinted fondant. I used rice crispie treats covered in fondant for the legs. I just kept shaping the face until I got it right then worked on shaping the tail. I used mistletoe leaf cutters to make the back spines out of fondant, cut a small slit down his back and popped them in. He wanted his dragon to have lots of 'spots', so I just used a small circle cutter for the fondant spots and stuck them on with a little water. I put the whole dragon on top of a 1/4 sheet cake to add more servings. He and his friends loved it and I had a blast making it! If you want to take your cake baking skills to another level, then you should consider looking at a book and video course by Maddy Pearson.
